Mrs. Milly Garcia, 8th Grade
2018-19 is my 30th year of teaching at St. Cecilia’s. I taught 4th grade for 3 years, 6th grade for 17 years, and have been in 8th grade the past 8 years. Before that, I taught English at Creighton University for 10 years as well as teaching in Creighton’s Post Baccalaureate Program for minority students entering the health professions. I graduated from Council Bluffs St. Albert, and have a B.A. and M.A. in English from Creighton, where I also did additional coursework to get my K-8 teaching certificate and my Middle School Endorsement. While at St. Cecilia’s, I have served as Intermediate Grades Coordinator, Junior High Coordinator, and now as Middle School Coordinator. I have received the St. Cecilia Gommermann Outstanding Teacher Award, and have served on or chaired several committees, including the Writing Committee and Reading Committee. In 2006, I was selected to participate in the Bearing Witness Advanced program, traveling in Israel for 9 days with a group of 20 Catholic School educators to learn more about Holocaust education. I have also participated in the Coverdell Peace Corps Education program, which matches classes with Peace Corps Volunteers with whom they correspond; three St. Cecilia graduates have corresponded with my classes during their PC service in Morocco, Benin, and Rwanda.
My three adult children are all graduates of St. Cecilia’s, and I am a parishioner and EME at the Cathedral. I lived in the St. Cecilia neighborhood for over 30 years, and my interests include writing, reading, Holocaust education, interfaith education, history, and travel (particularly international travel), and cooking. I've been to Canada, England, Ireland, Israel, Morocco, spent one night in Spain, and have been to about half the states in the U.S. I love teaching middle school students, and am pleased that many of them stay in touch with me long after they leave St. Cecilia’s.
